It Starts with Self-Respect

Respecting yourself means giving and defining your own worth and value as a human being. Respect is one of mankind’s most noble sentiments. The highest levels of respect are always earned, never given. This is true of self-respect as well as respect for others. It is an idea that alludes to the capacity to esteem and honor someone else, both their words and activities, regardless of whether we don’t endorse or share all that the person does. It is tolerating the other individual and making an effort not to disrespect them. As William Ury writes in his book The Third Side: “Human beings have a host of emotional needs for love and recognition, for belonging and identity, for purpose and meaning to lives. If all these needs had to be subsumed in one word, it might be respect”. The presence of respect can therefore create opportunities. So, always be kind, polite and afford a basic level of respect for your fellow man.
